This article is about the 7 waterfalls of Meghalaya that you should visit during your first Meghalaya Trip.

Meghalaya is “The Abode of Clouds”—full of greenery, hills, rivers, and beautiful waterfalls. It is one of the most popular states in Northeast India for tourism.

My Instagram Saved Posts are full of offbeat waterfalls of Meghalaya. Hopefully, I will visit the offbeat ones soon.

For now, I hope this article helps you plan your first trip to Meghalaya, especially the ‘waterfalls’. A Meghalaya tour is incomplete without visiting the waterfalls.

1. Nohkalikai Falls

I visited Nohkalikai Falls in 2015. It is one of the most famous waterfalls in Meghalaya for tourists.

This waterfall lies close to Cherrapunji and is enveloped by towering cliffs and luxuriant forests.

A viewpoint is a great location to take a picture of its beauty, as during the rainy season, it flows massively with its full strength.

2. Seven Sisters Waterfalls

Seven Sister Waterfalls are also known as Nohsngithiang Falls. The monsoon months – May to August are the best to visit this waterfall.

The water flow and the volume, the clouds, and the view of the Bangladesh plains are the best.

As its name suggests, this waterfall is made up of seven streams of water, each descending a limestone cliff.

3. Phe Phe Falls

If you are looking to go to a waterfall with unadulterated beauty, then you must consider visiting Phe Phe Falls in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

I have been to Phe Phe Falls 3 times, and I loved every experience of it.

The waterfall can be reached from Jowai and eventually, you can head to Dawki through the same route.

4. Dainthlen Falls

If you are someone who wants to visit waterfalls that come with a touch of folklore, then Dainthlen Falls is a must-visit. This one is near Cherrapunji and is associated with folklore with a legendary serpent that was slain here.

Smooth rocks with water falling off the top make the area have pools and some minor streams perfect for a relaxation area.

5. Krang Suri Waterfalls

Relaxing in Jaintia Hills district Krang Suri Waterfalls is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Meghalaya. Its water is also a clear blue and the place has made for a nice background for swimming and having a picnic.

Even though the hike to the waterfall takes about 30 min, still it gives an adventurous touch and the view once you are there will make you spellbound.

6. Elephant Falls

Situated six kilometres away from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, Elephant Falls is one of the most visited water bodies in this area.

From the entrance to the last section of the waterfall, you will love walking alongside it.

The name has been derived from a large pedestal resembling the figure of an elephant which, however, was reduced to pieces as a result of an earthquake. .

7. Kynrem Falls

Located in the Thangkharang Park and also another beautiful sight in Meghalaya are the Kynrem Falls.

Hiking to this 3-tiered waterfall might take time but it is considered one of the biggest waterfalls in Meghalaya surrounded by beautiful greens.

Unfortunately, when I visited it in 2015, it was fully covered by fog. We could only hear the sound of its gushing waters.

Conclusion

Unlike many other regions in the country where one will have a hard time seeing a few waterfalls, the state of Meghalaya will surprise you with an unlimited number of waterfalls – each different and beautiful.

Be it monsoon or winter months, the waterfalls will make you fall in love with Meghalaya. If you love blue natural pools, waterfalls with normal water flow and clear weather – winter is the right time.

Monsoon is when the waterfalls overflow, if you look at a hill, you will see them flowing from far away, and the weather will be mostly cloudy and foggy.

Apart from waterfalls, you can go for a short hiking trip in Meghalaya.

Wari Chora in the South Garo Hills, is new but has become a popular tourist spot in Meghalaya.

I hope this helps you plan your first Meghalaya trip.
