Maharashtra is known for Mumbai, Bollywood, its financial markets and a cricket culture that needs little introduction. But step outside the cities and the landscape changes.
The Sahyadris, the Western Ghats that run through Maharashtra, are home to old forts, forested hills and some of the state’s highest peaks.
Harishchandragad rises to around 1,422 metres and is known for its ancient fort and the dramatic Konkan Kada, while Kalsubai stands at 1,646 metres, making it the highest peak in Maharashtra.
Both are popular trekking destinations, but the experience is quite different. So, if you are planning a trek in Maharashtra’s Sahyadris, which one should you choose – Harishchandragad or Kalsubai?
The difference goes beyond their altitude and trek duration. Each trek has its own landscape, attractions and challenges, and the better choice depends on what kind of experience you are looking for.
Let’s look at both treks and see which one suits you better according to your preference and comfort.

Harishchandragad and Kalsubai Trek Overview: Two Very Different Sahyadri Experiences
Harishchandragad
Harishchandragad holds a historic significance and is often a choice of trekkers who want to learn about the temples and age-old architectures.
It is longer than Kalsubai for many routes, although it can be completed in a day depending on the route and itinerary.
Base Village: Khireshwar
Trek Distance: 14 km
Route Options: Pachnai (beginner-friendly), Khireshwar (demanding route), and Belpada (reserved for experienced trekkers).
Kalsubai
Kalsubai is the highest peak in Maharashtra and is known for its attractive views from the peak.
People generally complete this trek within a day, and once you reach the top, you are welcomed by several forts.
Base Village: Bari
Trek Distance: 8.6 km
Route: Straight from Bari village
How Do Harishchandragad and Kalsubai Compare in Height and Difficulty?
While both Harishchandragad and Kalsubai trek are a part of the Sahyadri range, they are not exactly the same when it comes to the attributes.
Here is how both the adventurous experiences offer you something unique:
Harishchandragad is a hill fort which you can reach after walking to an impressive 4,671 ft altitude. Although located at a lower belt compared to Kalsubai, the trek is expansive and feels moderate to severely difficult for the trekkers. It depends on the individual’s stamina and experience.
Kalsubai Peak is situated at a 5,400 ft altitude, making it sound like one of the most challenging treks in Maharashtra. However, it is not as difficult as it sounds and can be completed in just 8 to 10 hours. This trek can also be covered at night if you want to witness the beautiful sunrise. Although the Kalsubai route is moderately difficult, beginners can pursue it if they are fit.
Pachnai, Khireshwar or Belpada: Which Route Should You Take for Harishchandragad trek?
As we discussed earlier, you can reach the Harishchandragad fort via three routes, depending on the kind of experience you are aiming for.
Your options are:
1. Pachnai
The Pachnai route is ideal for first-timers, as it is 3 km long and has metallic ladders and railings installed for safety.
You don’t have to hire a guide or train yourself. This route has a total ascending time of two hours.
So, it is perfect if you don’t want to challenge yourself beyond limits.
2. Khireshwar
Another choice is via Khireshwar, a route that challenges you through its muddy roads and loose rocks.
This option can be demanding but has markings in intervals to guide you.
Therefore, it is always advisable that you hire a local guide who can take you, especially if it is your first time. It covers 6 km one way and is moderately difficult.
3. Belpada
A journey via Nalichi Vaat would be the most difficult, starting from the Belpada village. It is 10 km long and is difficult for beginners.
You would not find many trail markings there, so it is recommended that you book a guide or come with an experienced person.
This route takes about two days, allowing you to camp at the fort and return in the evening.
Where Will You Get Better Sunrise and Sahyadri Views?
If you want to choose between Harishchandraga and Kalsubai for the view, the better option is Kalsubai. Here is why –
Kalsubai Peak is where several trekkers especially cover a night journey just so they can catch the sun coming up.
You can stay the night and set up a tent there so you can witness the gorgeous sunrise exactly when it happens.
But that doesn’t mean you will not get to experience the glory of dawn at the other peak.
Once you reach the Harishchandraga, you can trek further and reach the Taramati Peak (it will take around 1.5 hours).
From the top, you will get a beautiful view of the Sahyadri hills and the sun rising upon you.
Overall, it depends on the kind of experience you are wishing for.
Harishchandragad Highlights: Konkan Kada, Kedareshwar Cave and Ancient Temples
If you have finally decided to climb to the Harishchandragad Fort, you are in for a beautiful experience. The place is home to history and culture, rooted in the following sites:
Konkan Kada
Konkan Kada isn’t your regular cliff. When the weather is right, you can actually watch the clouds move towards the edge and disappear into the vertical rock face. For a moment, it looks as if the clouds are merging with the cliff itself.
It looks like you are watching a stunning cloudburst (not scary, but gorgeous). Also, this spot is where you can enjoy a sunset from, so it is perfect if you are a dusk lover.
Ancient Temples
The Harishchandreshwar Temple is carved out of a massive rock, and you can see beautiful sculptures covering its walls as you walk around it.
Walk a little to the east of the temple and you will reach the sacred Saptateertha Pushkarni lake. Priests regularly perform rituals here, while devotees visit the lake to offer prayers and seek the blessings of Lord Shiva.
During the flowering season, the temple is surrounded by Sonki flowers, adding a beautiful touch to the place. The sight of the bright yellow flowers around the old temple makes the entire setting feel calm and peaceful.
Kedareshwar Cave
When you visit the Harishchandreshwar Temple, you will find a cave on the right that houses a huge Shiva Linga. Cold water flows through the cave and reaches up to the Linga’s chest, making the place feel quite different from the temple outside.
Inside the cave are four stone pillars known as Satya, Treta, Dvapara and Kali. Some of them are broken, and local belief associates the pillars with the four Yugas of Hindu tradition.
Kalsubai Highlights: The Highest Peak, Temple and Sunrise from the Top
Kalsubai Peak is a popular choice for beginners and, at 1,646 metres, it is the highest peak in Maharashtra. Despite its height, the trek can be completed in a few hours, making it shorter than the more demanding routes to Harishchandragad.

At the summit, you will find the small Kalsubai Devi Temple, where trekkers and devotees stop to offer their prayers. The temple also serves food to devotees.
Many trekkers time their climb to reach the top around sunrise, when the surrounding Sahyadri peaks slowly light up with the morning sun.

The climb can still be tiring, especially if you are new to trekking, but the views from the summit make the effort worthwhile.
Monsoon or Winter: When Should You plan Harishchandragad or Kalsubai?
Timing matters when you are trekking in the Sahyadris.
During the monsoon, the hills turn green and the waterfalls are at their best, but the trails can become slippery and difficult to navigate, especially around steep sections. If you are not comfortable with slippery trails, it is better to avoid trekking to Harishchandragad and Kalsubai during heavy rains.
September onwards is a good time to visit Kalsubai, while October to February is considered the best period for Harishchandragad.
Winter brings clearer skies and comfortable trekking conditions. The trails are usually drier, and many trekkers prefer starting at night to reach the summit in time for sunrise.
October and November are particularly good months to visit if you want to avoid the heavy monsoon rains while still enjoying pleasant trekking conditions.
