Are wondering about the activities and things to do in Kerala with your family or friends, here is a checklist of things to take part in Kerala to help make your vacation unforgettable.

Kerala a state in South India is not only known for its highest literacy rate but also its tourism. It is among the most intriguing places for experiencing culture, hills and coastal tourism.

The state is bordered by the states of Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu and by the Lakshadweep Sea on the other side.

The speak of Kerala speak Malayalam. But they also have local tribal dialects among the different ethnic groups living in the state.

Kerala is blessed with beautiful beaches, the western ghats, scenic peaks, cloudy hill stations and the most famous and peaceful Kerala backwaters. No wonder it is called God’s Own Country.

Visiting India and not exploring Kerala would be a missed opportunity.

8 Things to Do in Kerala India

1. Houseboat in Kerala backwaters

An excursion to Kerala isn’t complete without visiting Kerala’s backwaters. If you go solo or with a group, make sure your Kerala tour includes the backwaters.

The lush landscape of palms, and the diverse wildlife and villages and houses dotted along the backwaters, make a cruise appear like a trip to another realm.

It’s a relaxing experience, certainly one that could be a part of an unforgettable romantic vacation. Choose a homestay or a hotel along the way to take in the rich traditions that abound in these inland lakes, lagoons, and rivers.

2. Campfire and camping in Munnar & Wayanad

A trip to Kerala is incomplete without a visit to the scenic hills of Munnar and Wayanad.

Everyone has longed to go to the campground once in a while and enjoy a wonderful campfire with family or friends. Munnar is a place of breathtaking natural beauty, and camping on its hills is worth it.

It is possible to hike through the day and camp out during the night in thickets and lush greenery that will allow you to feel completely at ease and connected to the natural world.

The cool, refreshing atmosphere is anything more than comfortable and allows you to enjoy some precious time together with loved ones. While the hike is as thrilling as it can be, it’s equally relaxing at the end of the day.

Luckily, I had the opportunity to do my Anthropology research work in Wayanad where I stayed for 17 days. The experience of learning the culture and creating beautiful connections are moments I will treasure for life.

3. Feel the Neelakurinji blooming

Eravikulam National Park is a well-known tourist destination due to the presence of Neelakurinji, which blooms every twelve years. The once-in-a-blue moonscape is an awe-inspiring experience for everyone.

The National Park is home to some rare flora and fauna. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to see the Nilgiri Thar– an endangered mountain goat, while hiking through the hills.

4. Enjoy Snake Boat Racing

It is fascinating to watch the snake boat race in Alappuzha, Kerala. Enjoy the excitement of racers and the crowd who cheer, shout and clap in an incredible competitive spirit when viewing the Nehru Trophy Boat Race.

You can get a firsthand experience of the event by renting a snake boat and taking part yourself. It is one of the top activities to experience during your visit to Kerala in September.

5. Elephant safari

Elephant Safari is a popular activity for tourists in Kerala.

The Mahouts (elephant conductors) in Kerala are top-quality, which makes the trip thrilling, safe and secure. You can even arrange a short safari on the back of an elephant.

Kerala is recognized as a state that is devoted to all its parts. The state doesn’t leave a scratch unturned in taking care of wild creatures in terms of its wildlife. If you’ve not experienced a wilderness safari, it’s time to take one.

Thekkady provides sessions where you can wash in the water, snap pictures, go on rides with elephants, or take a break from their closeness. It’s up to you to choose how you spend time with them.

6. Visit Kovalam

When it comes to Kerala tourist spots, Kovalam tops our renowned list for its beautiful beauty and tranquil beaches.

Kovalam also has the most luxurious hotels in India and resorts on beaches that are known to provide the finest treatments in Ayurveda and spa massages.

Enjoy the breathtaking sunsets from the stunning Kovalam Beach or take part in exciting adventures such as boat rides, parasailing, surfing, kayaking and scuba diving.

In addition to the tranquil beaches, a variety of Hindu temples also can be seen in Kovalam Kerala.

7. Visit Kochi

This historic city boasts a bustling port and world-renowned Chinese nets for fishing, which got its name from the ancient spice route. To witness the rich heritage and splendour of Kochi, it is best to take guided or DIY walking tours in Fort Kochi.

In Fort Kochi, you’ll find stunning Portuguese churches to magnificent colonial mansions.

8. Try the local cuisine

Kerala’s delicious variety of cuisines is one of the most desired tourist attractions.

It’s an amalgamation of Hindu, Christian, and Muslim food styles. Rice, coconut, and spices are essential ingredients in various meals.

As Kerala is a state with coastal seafood like pearl spots, fish (karimeen) and prawns are a favourite among the locals as well as the tourists.

Tapioca (kappa), served with fish curry, is also popular. The appam served with stew (vegetarian or chicken) is an absolute must.

Flaky delicious bread (parotta) and curry are popular choices too. Biryanis are also highly sought-after.

Locally made chips from Jackfruit or banana will keep you energized. Thalassery biryani is my favourite.

While studying in Pondicherry for two years, and also while visiting Kerala – one of the best things that happened to me was the variety of delicious South Indian dishes. Perhaps, I will write a new blog post dedicated to traditional cuisines.

I hope you loved the list of unique things to do in Kerala. Exploring Kerala becomes more fun when you know the local language. Learning Malayalam and exploring like a local is one of my future goals.

I would love to hear your stories of visiting Kerala in the comments section.
